During the development of D3’s U-Box concept electric car, Huntsman used its Araldite materials, but also researched and developed sustainable products. This included the preparation of moulds using seamless modelling pastes and boards, and involved new concepts for developing components using stereolithography and rapid manufacturing resins, plus the use of encapsulation solutions for electronic components.
Materials including renewable flax and basalt fibres for reinforcing composite parts have been used in combination with toughened resins, as well as halogen free, fire resistant resin and flexible composite. The vehicle also benefits from a new resin range, and high performance thin barrier coatings provide protection for the flexible OLEDs used in the car’s composite structure.
