Hydraulic and pneumatic tools are two of the most common types of power tool available. They are also the most important types of power tools in your shop to master. Hydraulic tools work with a hydraulic fluid source, whereas pneumatic tools work through compression air supply. Both serve their purposes in both industrial and residential settings, but each has its benefits and drawbacks.
Pneumatic Tools
The pneumatic tools are operated by compressed air. A hollow cylinder pressurizes air before it is released to operate the tool. The air pressure and volume are controlled by an air regulator that’s adjustable from a low slow speed to a faster high speed. The tool may have a side handle for better grip and control of the fast-moving tool. Both the down and up stroke of the tool are activated by the fluid. The down stroke transfers energy from the transmission to the work surface, whereas the up stroke returns energy from the work surface to the transmission for the next action. In both cases, there is a cyclic reciprocation of energy between one end and another. The pump may be either separate or integrated into one unit as part of a power tool drive system.

Drilling and tapping – The pneumatic and hydraulic type tools are used in this application, but pneumatic tools are more common. Hydraulic power drills can reach speeds of up to 1,200 rpms. Pneumatic drills can reach speeds of up to 2,500 rpm.
Milling and shaping – The pneumatic and hydraulic type tools are used in this application, but pneumatic tools are more common. Pneumatically powered tools have somewhat lower top speeds than their hydraulic counterparts (400 rpm for the pneumatics versus 1,200 for the hydraulics) but they can be controlled with a higher degree of precision by means of a governor system employed by the machine’s control circuitry.
Grinding – Grinders are used in industrial and residential settings to smooth out rough shapes or remove surface imperfections before new layers of material are applied. Grinders can be powered by either a pneumatic or a hydraulic system.
Hammering – Automotive mechanics use various tools, such as lathes and hammers that are powered by compressed air. The power hammer is the most common tool used by blacksmiths to shape hot material. A punch, which is a type of die, and compressed air are used together for this action.
Which are better? Pneumatic or hydraulic tools?
Pneumatic tools are more flexible and easier to set up. They can be used with a larger variety of power sources, such as a gasoline engine, electric motor, air compressor or any other energy source that can supply compressed air.
Hydraulic tools offer more power than pneumatic ones. This is because they are directly coupled to the transmission of the machine. The higher energy associated with hydraulic tools produces higher torque resulting in faster action and lower force required by the operator for the same action.
