Manufacturers of electronic components in various industries have strong incentives to explore means of decreasing their energy usage. With advances in adhesive technology, TECHSiL, a company specialising in technical solutions, is well-positioned to offer adhesive solutions that can not only reduce energy consumption but also transform the assembly processes for electronic components.

The utilisation of UV-cure adhesives in automotive electronic applications can contribute significantly to energy conservation in multiple ways. UV-cure adhesives, specialized for hardening upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, offer numerous advantages over traditional adhesives when striving to enhance energy efficiency.

UV-cure adhesives harden almost instantly upon exposure to UV light, eliminating the need for prolonged heating or other energy-intensive curing procedures that traditional adhesives may necessitate offering a swift curing process. Where conventional adhesives often require curing at elevated temperatures for extended periods, demanding energy-intensive heating systems; UV-cure adhesives eliminate the necessity for these high-temperature curing processes, thus reducing energy consumption. Typically applied in liquid form and then solidified using UV light, UV cure adhesives allow for accurate and controlled application, minimising waste and decreasing the need for rework. The precision in application ensures that only the required amount of adhesive is utilised, conserving both materials and energy.

Traditional adhesives can induce thermal stress during the curing process, particularly when high temperatures are involved. Such stress may potentially harm delicate electronic components. UV-cure adhesives harden without generating excessive heat, diminishing the risk of thermal stress and associated energy losses. In addition, UV-cure adhesives deliver an immediate bond upon curing, streamlining the manufacturing process and eliminating the need to wait for adhesives to set or cure slowly over time. Expedited production cycles can lead to energy savings. UV-cure adhesives frequently require simpler and smaller curing equipment in comparison to traditional curing methods. This can lead to a smaller production footprint and a decrease in energy consumption related to equipment operation and maintenance.

Certain traditional adhesives rely on solvent-based carriers for application, which can be energy-intensive to produce and contribute to volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. UV-cure adhesives are frequently solvent-free, reducing both energy consumption and environmental impact. Often offering a stronger and more reliable bonds due to their rapid and controlled curing process. This can result in longer-lasting automotive electronics, reducing the need for repairs or replacements and conserving energy in the long term.

Products to Consider – Translucent, Dual Cure UV Adhesives

Launched in 2023 TECHSiL® are excited to introduce a brand new range of one-component, UV curable silicone sealing materials with dual cure feature known as the TECHSiL® RTV UV Series Silicones.

The grades which make up the new range are RTV19126; RTV19042; RTV19129 & RTV19131. All are translucent in colour, with a UV primary cure and a secondary moisture cure at room temperature or with thermal cure. The initial UV cure contributes to a reduction in cycle times; the secondary cure allows for a more complete cure to be achieved in shadowed areas where the UV light penetration is limited – solving a long standing problem which a single UV cure material could not satisfy.

These pioneering new materials can be selectively dispensed on display modules and can easily provide the flowability required to penetrate tight spaces. They have soft post-cure properties that can contribute to providing stress relief of delicate electronic components.

All grades are available in 50ml EFD syringes or 300ml cartridges. Find out more about the TECHSiL® RTV UV Series Silicones here

Conclusion

Overall, the use of UV-cure adhesives in electronic component manufacturing can lead to more efficient processes, reduced energy consumption, and improved product quality. However, it’s important to note that the adoption of UV-cure adhesives might require initial investment in UV curing equipment and process adjustments, but the long-term energy savings and other benefits can outweigh these costs.
