Murrelektronik has announced a scholarship programme which will enable two students from Wigan UTC Academy to gain valuable hands on experience at the company’s headquarters in Oppenweiler, Germany. The scholarship includes transport, accommodation and living expenses for a maximum of six weeks over the summer holidays.

It is hoped that the pilot programme will see the two winning students making huge leaps into the world of engineering and manufacturing and demonstrate to its German colleagues that there is some genuine talent and enthusiasm for engineering growing in the UK.

The students will have a full schedule of activity and spend time in all Murrelektronik departments: production plant, logistics and marketing, and participate in projects with other German trainees/students.

Korina Parker from Murrelektronik explained that the company is proud to offer this opportunity to Wigan UTC Academy students and that it will give them a further insight

into the world of work and Murrelektronik, which may lead them to apprenticeships as electronic engineers. Parker added: “Wigan UTC Academy is a great educational establishment focussing on Engineering Skills. The practical approach prepares students for further education at University or to take a higher apprenticeship maybe with companies like Murrelektronik.”

Wigan UTC academy director of commercial development, Bernard Edmunds, said: “Wigan UTC Academy is extremely grateful to Murrelektronik for offering this opportunity to our year 12 students.”

Edmunds added: “The job market is challenging now and will be going forward. Wigan UTC Academy is about a great educational journey which covers GCSE and A levels, but also can add value by teaching processes in electronics and engineering, together with food chain processing.”
