Team members from University Technology College (UTC) Swindon will be travelling to various towns around Wiltshire, within an 18 mile radius of the proposed Bristol Street site, visiting their supporting business partners and raising awareness of the new college to potential students and their families.
UTC Swindon will be opening its doors in September 2014 and its vision is to be a college where engineering and innovation can flourish. It will cater for 600 14 to 19 year olds interested in pursuing a career in engineering. For these young people, it will provide an opportunity to gain highly desirable skills and raise their aspirations in progressing to careers in the engineering industry.
The team will be hosting the free to attend events on:
Thursday 12 September 2013: Zycko, Inda House, the Mallards, Broadway Lane, South Cerney, GL7 5TQ
Monday 23 September 2013: St Andrew’s Methodist Church Hall, Lyneham
Tuesday 24 September 2013: Corn Exchange, Faringdon, SN7 7JA
Wednesday 25 September 2013: Wiltshire Heritage Museum, 41 Long Street, Devizes, SN10 1NS
Thursday 26 September 2013: Arval, Windmill Hill, Swindon, SN5 6PE
The public events will run from 6.15 pm until 7.45 pm. There will be presentations from the directors and new principal Angela Barker-Dench will be making her first public appearance as part of UTC Swindon on Monday 23 September 2013. All members will be on hand to answer any questions about the new University Technical College.
Staff and directors from UTC will describe this new offer in technical education and how to apply for places. Designs of the £10m state-of-the art buildings will be displayed for attendees’ perusal along with the scale model building.
Neil Edwards, supply chain manager at Zycko, said: “We are very excited to be hosting a regional open evening for UTC Swindon. It is a great opportunity for people to come down and not only find out about the University Technical College but what the industry partners have to offer the potential students.”
Dr Gareth Neighbour, who heads up Engineering at Oxford Brookes University, will be sharing details of the curriculum at UTC Swindon and talking about how the courses are linked to the work of local and national engineering employers.
Several industry partners such as Network Rail, Arval, Zycko, Plantronics and BAM Construction, will be on display. They will provide insight, to potential students, into what input the partners have regarding UTC Swindon. Attendees will be able to see the types of engineering careers available once they have finished with their education.
UTC Swindon will be run by a Trust owned by Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells and Oxford Brookes University. There are over 30 different industry partners involved including: BMW UK Manufacturing, Alcatel-Lucent, Halcrow Group, Honda of the UK Manufacturing, Intel Corp UK, Network Rail, Nationwide Building Society and Thames Water.
