New Technology CADCAM is running two ‘Dare to Design’ SOLIDWORKS 2016 launch events, which are being held on 10 November at The Wing (Silverstone, Buckinghamshire) and 12 November at the Magna Science Centre (Rotherham, Yorkshire).

Some great speakers will be talking about inspirational design projects and best practice in the UK, with Mark Shayler from This is Ape on board as the keynote speaker. Mark will be sharing his thoughts about design and manufacture in the UK.

Talks will be interspersed with sessions on the new features in SOLIDWORKS 2016 and the day will be broken up with speakers and product presentations on the best of design and manufacture in four key areas: design, validate, collaborate and build.

About the speakers

Mark Shayler, This is Ape,  Keynote speaker (North and South events):

Mark, who has spent most of his life blending his love of design with his love of science, runs the innovation and environmental consultancy Ape, working with companies and individuals to help them develop ideas. He is the author of the Do Disrupt workbook and a founding partner of the Do Lectures. He also helps to run Good For Nothing – a collaborative group that delivers design and strategy work for good causes, for nothing. Mark will be speaking about how we need to shout about our successes more in the UK and what needs to happen to raise our expertise in design and build, so that UK design and manufacture is the pinnacle of best practice globally.

Aurelia Hibbert, Programme Director, Cambridge University Eco Racing (South event):

Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) is a 60-strong student organisation that designs, builds and races solar powered vehicles. CUER is a not-for-profit organisation that is mainly funded through corporate sponsorship and private support. Since it was founded in 2007, CUER has been the UK’s number one for solar vehicle development. CUER races in the World Solar Challenge, the world’s foremost solar endurance race, held in Australia, and its racing cars showcase cutting-edge sustainable engineering and demonstrate the incredible potential of electric vehicle technologies. By designing a car to run on solar power alone, CUER is driving the step changes in vehicle efficiency and new technologies for a low-carbon future. Aurelia is first full-time Programme Director of CUER and her role is to oversee the entire project and also set a precedent for future full-time team members. She will explain how the team works together to collaborate and share knowledge so the programme moves forward, even with changes in the team members.

Ted Varley, Technical Director, Courtney Medynski, Product Development Manager and Martin Wallace, Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at Steeper Group (North event):

With a history stretching back almost 100 years, Steeper Group is a pioneering name in prosthetics, orthotics and assistive technology – bringing together innovative products, craft and clinical services to do one thing: create fundamental, positive turning points that enhance and empower lives. The team will be sharing their experiences on collaborative design and validation, the real challenges that they’ve faced and how they have overcome them.

Ardingly College Solar Car Challenge (North and South events):

The team of British schoolchildren at Ardingly College West Sussex is the first in Europe to compete in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge – a grueling race in a solar-powered electric vehicle they designed and built themselves across 3,020 kilometers from Darwin to Adelaide.

The modified Lotus 7 chassis is fitted with a custom-built composite shell and 24% efficient Silicon Photovoltaic solar panels. Regulations stipulate that a Cruiser class vehicle must be practical, have four wheels and upright seating for passengers. It needs to comply with a staggering 43 pages and 366 regulations, or risk exclusion from the world’s ultimate solar marathon. Hear what the next generation of designers has learnt from this pioneering project.

Will Bridgman, Managing Director, Warren Services (North and South events):

Will Bridgeman is managing director of Warren Services, which was founded in 1990 and provides high quality manufacture of components and mechanical / electrical sub assemblies, offering turnkey solutions in engineering and design. Its two sites in Thetford, Norfolk offer a range of high quality services including CNC machining, welding, fabrication and finishing as well as water jet, laser and folding. Will Bridgman will be talking about what manufacturing in the UK really means and how Warren Services works with customers in relation to materials, resources and skillsets.

What else will delegates get from the Dare to Design events?

As well as the main conference programme, there will be plenty of time for networking during the breaks. There will also be a room where different pieces of software and hardware are being demoed and that will include displays from some of New Technology CADCAM’s partners.

Delegates will also learn about the new features in SOLIDWORKS 2016 showing how to work smarter and faster.
